I LOVED this book. I have never visited Alaska, much less lived there, but I have a feeling this humorous book captures the spirit (and many of the experiences) of many of the residents there. I often read this book before going to bed with my husband and he had to use ear plugs more than once because I could not stifle my laughter, especially when I was taking the SAT (Standardized Alaskan Test) at the end of the book. I need to quite writing now so I can buy the next book by this author about Alaska.Product details

A good read but on occassion each chapter would become a little boring, not all but some, still will recommend this book for anyone (like myself) who has spent 5+ years in different areas of Alaska doing consulting work for the Alaska Fisheries Industry (Kodiak, Sitka, Juneau, Dutch Harbor)
loved this it was very funny! author made me contemplate ever moving there lol loved the quiz section! going to buy his other book.
I was raised in Alaska from the 40's to late 50's and have been homesick ever since. This author took me home, hilariously! His Peek A Moose has me still laughing weeks later. This is a wonderfully funny insiders look at the many vagaries of living in Alaska.
Thank you A E Poynor for taking me home and making me laugh. Please don't miss reading anything you can get that A E Poynor has written, he has the gift of laughter and he shares it with you.
This was a very entertaining book. I purchased it on a whim; for the price, I thought "why not?". So glad I did; I think a lot of people would like this book, for many different reasons. I read it cover-to-cover at home; however, I think it would also be a very good vacation read, or even just as an "occasional" read, for short story fans who also enjoy regional humor. I will probably read the sequel as well.
I have lived most of my life in Africa, and would normally avoid snow and ice whenever possible. This humorous account of life in Alaska was not only highly entertaining, but also described a lifestyle many of us will never see, coping with Winter in the frozen North. I bought it because I am planning to go on a cruise in Alaska. The cruise season is only May to September, so I won't experience the "big freeze" that is the Alaskan Winter, but this book gave me some insight into the nature of the people who inhabit such an inhospitable part of the world. One can only admire their resourcefulness and fortitude.
Like any book of essays, some are better than others. Some will have you rolling on the floor gasping for breath and wiping tears from your eyes. I started reading it in bed (a mistake!) and had to get up to go read the dog essay to my fiancé. This is well worth the price, even if you have never lived in Alaska (I have) and you may well recognize neighbors and family in his pungent sketches of people and the crazy things they do. Enjoy!
I found this book amusing, but not laugh out loud funny. I flunked the sSAT test so I do not think I will be moving to Alaska anytime soon. Still want to visit though.
